Types of Latex

  • Organic Rubber Latex

Latex comes in three different types, which are Organic Rubber Latex, Synthetic Latex, and a combination of the two.

Organic Latex

Organic latex is derived from the sap of the rubber tree that has been processed—manufacturing process for Dunlop and Talalay gives more information. An organic latex mattress is devoid of chemical, pesticides, synthetics, herbicides, or man-made product of any sort.

100% Natural Dunlop or Talalay Latex

It is also from the sap of the rubber tree that has been processed, just like its organic latex counterpart –the manufacturing process for Dunlop and Talalay gives more information. USDA agricultural certification is not part of Natural latex. There is a slight difference during manufacturing when it comes to organic and 100% natural latex, and they bear identical quality as the end product.

Synthetic Latex

This latex is not 100% organic and has a petroleum-based plasticizer as additives—for example, butadiene and styrene.

Blended Latex

During production of mattresses, a combination of organic and synthetic latex may be introduced. We don’t produce latex mattress of this nature. Note that some combination latex mattresses contain fillers—that may be particles of clay or other materials—mixed into the latex. With fillers, you’ll get cheaper latex, but the downside is it becomes less durable and stiffer.

The Extraction of Latex and its Sustainability

Rubber latex mattress sap can be found in the following countries; Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. From sustainable plantation in Sri Lanka most of the sap for dunlop latex is the extracted and assembled in the United States.

A profound technique employed for latex tapping eliminates the need for tree cutting, to extract latex, which invariably initiates a sustainable relationship between sleep and sap.

Latex can be extracted through the cutting of the bark of rubber trees in a careful manner—and heals rapidly. The tree is not damaged in the process, as the white milk-type sap flows gently. Rubber latex is capable of producing latex for up to 30-years. The land that harbors the trees is replanted and Rubber-wood is used to produce furniture when trees are harvested. Latex is biodegradable and 100% natural.

To clearly appreciate latex value, it is imperative to note that each rubber tree weeps 15 grams of latex on a daily basis. With a queen size mattress, expect a daily output of 2,500 trees spreading over 12 acres of rubber plantation. Thus, rubber tappers are able to eke out a living. It might interest you to know that rubber trees are responsible for 143 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide removal from the environment annually.

Manufacturing Process

Dunlop

  1. The deployment of this process in latex manufacturing dates back to 1929
  2. Using a centrifuge, thick rubber sap is whipped into froth.
  3. Sap is introduced into a mold after which it is covered and steam baked subsequently.
  4. Settling of natural sediments to the bottom of mold takes place, and that’s why Dunlop is slightly firmer on bottom side.

Talalay

  1. A newer process entailing two additional steps.
  2. The whipping of rubber into froth via centrifuge.
  3. Sap is introduced and mold covered.
  4. A vacuum chamber is used to continue the process, without air.
  5. With the help of chemicals to initiate the stability of materials, the mold is flash frozen.
  6. The baking of mold takes place.

Consistency

Dunlop

Dunlop has a higher density than Talalay, making it firmer, heavier and even more durable

Talalay

Talalay comes with a more consistent cell structure. Thus, it is softer and pillow-like.

It is used as a base core component because of its firmer quality.

Talalay

Talalay is used as top cushion layer.

Latex Allergies

Allergies result due to the presence of proteins in a material. When you consider the protein in latex, some people may have allergic reactions. Food proteins, such as bananas, avocados, kiwi, chestnuts, and tomatoes are similar to the ones found in organic latex.

Individuals manifest allergic reactions with different severity, which is dependent on the extent of contact between latex and the human body. Extreme allergic reactions often occur during exposure to balloons, condoms, gloves, and several other products that are in contact with the body.

But when it comes to organic latex mattress, people barely experience severe allergic reactions because of sheets, pillow cases, and mattress cover that protect the body from the latex. With a 100% organic manufacturing processes, allergies can be prevented when free proteins are washed off extensively. Using 1.5 cubic meters of drinkable water, a final wash through is achieved which minimizes allergic reaction to a large extent. To this end, good quality drinking water and its availability is an essential part of organic latex production.
